Then we go on to the Trinity of Pilgrims Square to visit the Church of the Most Holy Trinity of Pilgrims, a historical pilgrim-reception place initiated by St. Philip Neri.<\/p>\n\n

Pietralcina and San Giovanni Rotondo: Padre Pio<\/h2>\n\n

A journey following St. Pio, the Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to the ill.<\/p>\n\n

Arrival in\u00a0Petralcina<\/strong>, a small town in the\u00a0Benevento<\/strong>\u00a0area, 100 Km from Naples, where the Capuchin friar was born. He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Here you can visit the house where the friar was born, and the St. Francis\u2019 Chapel, where he used to pray and the Capuchin friary.<\/p>\n\n

Afternoon<\/h6>\n\n

Transfer to\u00a0San Giovanni Rotondo<\/strong>, a small town in the\u00a0Foggia<\/strong>\u00a0area, where\u00a0St. Pio<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Petralcina<\/strong>\u00a0lived and died. In 2004 a sanctuary was inaugurated in his honor. Every year millions of pilgrims arrive to\u00a0San Giovanni Rotondo<\/strong>\u00a0to pray over his mortal remains. Bari: Saint Nicholas<\/h2>\n\n

This is a destination both for Catholic and Orthodox worshipers.<\/p>\n\n

The Basilica located in\u00a0Bari<\/strong>, which holds\u00a0St. Nicholas\u2019 relics<\/strong>, has become a pilgrimage destination for worshippers worldwide since in 1087, when seamen from Bari purloined the bodily remains of the saint from Myra, in Turkey, where he was a bishop.<\/p>\n\n

Inside the Basilica, you can visit the\u00a0Museum of St. Nicholas<\/strong>, which holds a collection of treasures concerning the history of the cathedral and of the Saint, such as parchments, illuminated manuscripts, epigraphs and votive offerings from worshipers worldwide.<\/p>\n\n

The basement hosts the\u00a0crypt<\/strong>, with the\u00a0Saint\u2019s tomb<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Russian-Orthodox Chapel<\/strong>, inaugurated in 1967, to honor the numerous Orthodox pilgrims visiting the Basilica. Events not to be missed are the majestic celebrations on December 6th and especially the fair taking place on May 7th-9th, during which the transfer of\u00a0St. Nicholas from Myra<\/strong>\u00a0to Bari is commemorated. The whole city celebrates: parades and processions are organized both in the small alleys in the old town and at sea.<\/p>\n\n

Cascia: Saint Rita of Cascia<\/h2>\n\n

She is the patron saint of families, of brides and mothers in particular, and of desperate cases.<\/p>\n\n

St. Rita<\/strong>\u00a0lived in a small town in the heart of Italy, where she died in the mid-fourteenth century. She is worshiped by the faithful worldwide for her humbleness and ability to forgive, an example of devotion as bride and mother first and as widow and nun after that. The Saint, whose life straddles the 14th and 15th century is called \u201cthe patron saint of impossible cases,\u201d since during her life she forgave her husband\u2019s murderers and managed to bring reconciliation to the respective families. She is also the Saint of the \u201cthorn\u201d and of the \u201crose,\u201d titles deriving from the thorn that wounded her forehead as a symbol of Christ\u2019s suffering on the cross and from the rose that bloomed in her garden in the depths of winter.<\/p>\n\n
