Matera: Living Nativity

Every year near Christmas the entire city of Matera becomes the setting for the world’s largest living nativity scene. The uniqueness of Matera and its sassi make it perfect for this role so much so that it feels like being catapulted into 2,000-year-old Palestine. It is no coincidence that the city has been chosen several times as a natural location to shoot major films about the life and death of Jesus (Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ being one of them). Each year the crib focuses on a different theme, and on some days visitors can participate as figurants inside the crib, thanks to an initiative called “visit-actors.”

Naples: The Nativity Scenes of San Gregorio Armeno
The date is: all year round and especially at Christmas time
San Gregorio Armeno is a street in the historic center of Naples that is famous for the many artisan stores that build the figurines and sets for the nativity scene. Via San Gregorio Armeno can be visited year-round, but at Christmas time it becomes an open-air market where all the creations that make the “Neapolitan nativity scene” famous throughout Italy are displayed and sold. Once again, the creativity and inventiveness of the Neapolitans leads the way. Every year, in fact, alongside the traditional figur ines, artisans enjoy creating statuettes of the hottest personalities of the moment: from national and international politicians, to TV stars and, unfailingly, soccer idols, in a combination of the sacred and the profane that is typical of this city.
