Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio

A dive into the ancient history, before the Romans conquered the region. An unusual itinerary which will take you into the heart of Etruscan towns.

Duration: 8 hours + transfer time from/to pick up/drop off location.
Morning

Arrival in Orvieto, a small town north of Rome, founded by the Etruscans in the 9th century. The first stop is the Saint Patrick’s Well, which dates back to 1500. You will be able to walk down the steps to the bottom of the well and, thanks to an innovative system of helicoidal stairs, those going down will never meet those going up. Next stop will be the city center, where you can visit the panoramic Tower of the Muslim, the impressive Dome, the culverts and the cisterns of the “Underground Orvieto.”

Afternoon

In the afternoon, the excursion continues in Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the most beautiful and enchanted Italian towns. This “frozen” town is the perfect destination for those who want to see something different from the usual touristic sights. Civita was erected on a tuff, or volcanic, rock in the middle of a wide valley and it can be reached only by walking over a long bridge that seems to be suspended in the air. The evocative town is also known as “the dying town” as it counts only 10 inhabitants.

Gaeta e Sperlonga

Morning

The tour starts in Gaeta first, a small seaside town still unknown by the majority of tourists. Historically, Gaeta has been an important town from a political, cultural and religious point of view. Afterward, you will be transferred to the top of “Mount Orlando” where you will visit the Mausoleum of Lucio Munazio Planco, where the Roman emperor is entombed. Then our driver will take you to the old part of the town to visit Saint Francis Church, the newly-restored Cathedral and the Church of the Annunciation with its marvelous Golden Chapel.

Afternoon

After lunch, on the way to Sperlonga, there will be a stop at the Tiberius Villa, which dates to the 1st century BC, and to the Grotto and the nearby National Archeological Museum. Here you will see many marble sculptures found when the villa was excavated. The last stop will be in the white town of Sperlonga, where you can take a relaxing walk and discover traditional artisan shops, the watchtowers and the belvedere, which will offer you a magnificent view.
